Whipping up meals with Worth Unlimited

Discover how Worth Unlimited provided a takeaway service to bring the community together.

Whipping up meals with Worth Unlimited

Worth Unlimited in Huddersfield usually run Holiday Lunch Clubs, aimed at, but not restricted to, families whose children would normally be on free school meals in term time.

In ‘normal’ times, the community would come together to enjoy a big sit-down meal together in the local church hall.

However, with the rise of Covid cases in the area, they had to get creative to maintain community support and connection over food – and they started up a takeaway service.

Wendy is the youth and community worker and general powerhouse at Lowerhouses, Huddersfield. She worked with children and younger community members to whip up 50 meals and puddings each day. This was for three days of the half-term holidays.

Meals included Wendy’s specialty – a chicken dinner with veg and roast potatoes. Meatballs in gravy with mash and vegetables have also been enjoyed by those tucking in. And for a special treat the team baked chocolate pudding and jam sponge with coconut – both from scratch.

The takeaway meals were boxed up and adults came to collect the dinners for their families.

Wendy said – “The holiday lunch club was really appreciated this half term. We had three new families take part and they said how they were relieved not to have to worry about how they were going to feed the whole family this week. The meals provided an excellent chance for people to catch up with their neighbours (socially distanced of course!) outside the building while waiting for their turn to collect the takeaways.”
